Job Title: Court of Appeals Law Clerk for the 2026-27 Term
Job Responsibilities:
The primary role of a Court of Appeals law clerk is to assist in the judicial decision-making process by providing comprehensive legal research and case analysis to the judges of the Court of Appeals. The **Members Only** is responsible for reviewing cases that have been appealed from district courts and administrative agencies. Specific duties include:
- Analyzing and researching cases on appeal.
- Reviewing records and transcripts from the district court thoroughly.
- Evaluating opposing briefs and supplementing the legal research presented in these briefs.
- Assisting judges in synthesizing facts and law accurately through the preparation of bench memoranda.
- Aiding in drafting judicial opinions and cite-checking these opinions to ensure accuracy and legality.
Law clerks will engage in intellectually stimulating tasks that enhance their skills in legal research, reasoning, strategy, and writing. They will gain exposure to various substantive areas of law and receive valuable training and mentorship from judges. This position also offers the opportunity to develop professional relationships with fellow judicial law clerks, which can be beneficial for future career endeavors.
Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for the position of a Court of Appeals law clerk, applicants must meet the following educational and experience requirements:
- Minimum academic requirement: Enrollment as a second-year law student.
- Graduation from an accredited law school is required to commence employment.
- Strong writing and research skills are essential.
- Significant legal writing experience is preferred, which may include experience on a law review or law journal.
- Professional skills and academic record will be considered during the selection process.
The judges of the court will select law clerks based on a thorough review of applications and interviews.
Salary Information:
The anticipated salary for the 2026-27 term is expected to be at least per hour, equating to approximately $75,000 per year. However, this amount may be subject to change based on future legislative appropriations.

Position Logistics:
- The position is classified as a Court of Appeals Law Clerk.
- Work will be conducted at the Minnesota Judicial Center located in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota.

- In-person interviews are scheduled for Friday, September 12th, and Monday, September 15th, 2025. Virtual interviews will be offered for candidates who are unable to travel for in-person interviews.
