Job Title: Housing Staff Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
The Housing Staff Attorney at the organization is responsible for providing legal assistance and representation to low-income individuals and families in housing-related matters. Key responsibilities include:
- Handling individual case work that involves eviction defense, unlawful lockouts, habitability issues, and challenges related to succession rights.
- Engaging in administrative advocacy and litigation in city and justice courts, including appellate practices.
- Representing clients in section 8 and other hearings concerning voucher changes or terminations.
- Conducting education and outreach efforts directed at community members, advocates, and service providers.
- Adhering to program and case handling standards, funder requirements, and the highest professional standards.
- Serving as a resource to the organization’s staff and access to justice communities.
- Making occasional appearances in night court concerning housing matters.
Education and Experience Information:
- The candidate must be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar or have out-of-state admission with eligibility and willingness to be admitted in New York State. The organization will consider 2023 law school graduates who plan to take the NYS Bar Exam.
- An understanding of the nature and dynamics of housing and benefits is required.
- The ability to handle a large caseload is necessary.
- Excellent people skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills, are essential.
- The ability to work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders is required.
- A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are necessary.
Preferred Experience:
- Two or more years of legal experience, including litigation, preferably with a background in housing.
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income persons with prior experience in legal services or a similar program.
Salary Information:
The salary for this position ranges from $68,351 to $126,373 annually, depending on experience and in accordance with the union scale. The role offers excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability coverages. Additional benefits include a defined contribution to a 403b plan, loan repayment assistance, and paid parental leave. After a brief probationary period, the position may allow for work from home up to two days per week.
