Job Title: Assistant State Public Defender
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant State Public Defender (ASPD) is responsible for providing legal representation at the circuit court (trial court) level. The role encompasses handling various types of cases, including but not limited to criminal, civil commitment, protective placement (personal guardianship), revocation of conditional liberty (probation, parole, or extended supervision), sexually violent offender commitment, and termination of parental rights. The ASPD represents clients in both juvenile and adult cases as specified by state law. The ASPD is tasked with zealously defending clients, protecting their constitutional rights, and advocating for an effective and fair criminal justice system. The position requires preparing and working with legal documents, conducting litigation or hearings, negotiating, and reviewing discovery. Additionally, ASPDs must manage their time effectively to meet hard deadlines and interact professionally with diverse groups, including office staff, clients, opposing counsel, and courts.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Assistant State Public Defender position must have graduated from or be in the process of graduating from an accredited law school. They must also be working towards admission to the Wisconsin Bar within the next year. Successful candidates must be licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin prior to their start date. Furthermore, the position requires education and/or training in providing legal representation, preparing and working with legal documents, and possessing time management skills. Well-qualified applicants will have experience representing criminal cases, preparing legal documents, and reviewing discovery.
Salary Information:
The starting salary for the Assistant State Public Defender position ranges from to per hour, which translates to an annual salary of $76, to $117,, depending on qualifications. In addition to the salary, the position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including access to health plans, paid time off, pension plans, and potential eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. The compensation package is designed to provide work/life balance and support professional development. Current state employees' pay will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan, and final selected candidates may be eligible for moving expense reimbursement to relocate to the place of employment.
