**Job Title: Law Clerk 2025 - 2026**
**Job Responsibilities:**
1. **Supreme Court Law Clerks:**
- Work with justices on complex cases involving difficult legal issues.
- Perform legal research, prepare written memoranda on novel issues, and assist in opinion preparations.
2. **Appellate Division Law Clerks:**
- Conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda.
- Process emergent motion applications and proofread published opinions.
- Prepare weekly memos and edit opinions for publication.
- Handle emergent applications and assist with research projects.
3. **Tax Court Law Clerks:**
- Review and process motions filed with the court.
- Conduct legal research and draft case management orders.
- Manage motion calendar and assist with remote proceedings.
4. **Assignment Judge Law Clerks:**
- Learn all aspects of court administration.
- Conduct research, prepare legal memos, manage judge’s docket.
- Assist with processing emergent motions.
5. **Family Division Law Clerks:**
- Conduct legal research for opinions and motions.
- Assist with remote proceedings and manage adjournment requests.
- Handle emergent applications and draft legal opinions and orders.
6. **Civil Division Law Clerks:**
- Prepare bench memoranda for civil motions and trials.
- Perform legal research, draft legal orders, and manage motion calendar.
- Assist with drafting legal opinions and case management functions.
7. **Criminal Division Law Clerks:**
- Conduct legal research for opinions and motions.
- Assist in drafting jury instructions, legal orders, and sentencing memoranda.
- Manage motion calendar and assist with remote proceedings.
8. **General Equity (Chancery) Law Clerks:**
- Conduct legal research on substantive and procedural legal matters.
- Review case files, prepare bench memoranda, draft orders.
- Interact with counsel and self-represented litigants regarding case management.
**Education and Experience Information:**
- Applicants must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association.
- The program is intended for recent graduates (within the last four years).
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- A course in mediation is helpful, and completion of Judiciary-sponsored mediation training is required for mediators.
**Salary Information:**
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
**Additional Information:**
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as per the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A valid New Jersey driver's license is required if vehicle operation is necessary.
- US citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
- A thorough background check, including fingerprinting, is mandatory for selected candidates.
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available annually, with most openings in the Superior Court Law Division in civil and criminal courts.
- Law clerks are exempt from the New Jersey residency requirement during their term.
**Application Process:**

- Candidates must complete the application process fully, including work experience and education sections, and attach required documents.
- Applicants will be contacted directly by judges or justices for interviews.
**Work Environment:**
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule with up to four days per month of remote work.
- Law clerks gain hands-on experience in a nationally recognized court system and acquire in-depth knowledge of the legal process.
