About the NJOPD
- Provides first class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels
- Represents individuals charged with criminal offenses, those whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, children who have been removed, individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, those convicted of sex offenses facing Megan's Law tier classification, and individuals seeking post-conviction relief
- Also represents clients in Recovery Court, Intensive Supervision Program matters, and as part of the Forensic Science Unit
Internships for Law Students
- Available for 2Ls and 3Ls
- Assist with case preparation, litigation, and ongoing/systemic projects related to NJOPD clients
- Conduct legal research and analysis
- Draft motions, briefs, memoranda, and reports
- Assist with trial preparation
- Participate in client and witness interviews
- Observe and appear in courtroom proceedings
- Attend training programs
- Students who have completed 2 years of law school may appear in court under supervision of NJOPD attorneys

About NJOPD
NJOPD is dedicated to providing first class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses, represent individuals whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, advocate for children who have been removed, represent individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, assist those convicted of sex offenses facing Megan's Law tier classification, and aid individuals seeking post-conviction relief. Internship Opportunities
NJOPD offers a diverse range of internship opportunities for law students, including:
- Assisting with investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation and advocacy

Interns will also have the opportunity to work with experienced attorneys and receive mentorship and training throughout their internship.
Eligibility and Application Process
NJOPD internships are available for 2Ls and 3Ls, and students who have completed 2 years of law school may also appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys. To apply, interested students should email a cover letter, resume, and writing sample (for law students only) to Internship Coordinator Dana Lane at ****. The cover letter should explain why the student is seeking an internship with NJOPD, their practice area(s) of interest, any geographic preferences or limitations, and their availability (including anticipated start/end date, number of hours, and schedule).
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be received between June 15th and July 31st for fall internships, between October 15th and November 30th for spring internships, and between December 15th and April 15th for summer internships. All applicants must also be interviewed by a regional office and/or the Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved prior to being offered an internship with NJOPD.
