JOB TITLE: Staff Attorney
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Actively participate in community outreach and education to address the civil legal needs of low-income individuals and seniors.
- Build and maintain relationships with community organizations to enhance collaborative efforts in legal advocacy.
- Actively listen to community residents about legal needs and develop strategies to address them on both an individual and systemic basis.
- Handle all elements of litigation including client interviewing, investigation, discovery, pleadings, briefs, and representation at hearings at both trial and appellate levels if appropriate.
- Supervise secretaries, law students, and other staff to ensure effective legal service delivery.
- Perform other duties as assigned to fulfill the organization's mission.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE INFORMATION:
- Must be licensed to practice law in Illinois or have the requisite credentials for reciprocity.
- Previous legal and non-profit experience is preferred, indicating a background in similar environments.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with people of diverse social, economic, and racial/ethnic backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, showcasing excellent verbal, analytical, writing, and organizational skills.
- Highly motivated with a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Strong commitment to justice for all, reflecting the organization's dedication to serving marginalized communities.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND DEMANDS:
- Applicants must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and car insurance to facilitate travel as required by job duties.
- Reliable home broadband internet is necessary to support remote work meetings, court and video conference hearings, and remote meetings/events with community partners.
SALARY INFORMATION:
- Compensation ranges from $75,000 to $100,000, depending on experience.
- The position includes excellent insurance and retirement benefits, along with generous leave benefits.
- As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the employer is an eligible employer for public service loan forgiveness programs.
