Job Title: Project Attorney (Term Position Through December 2026)
Job Responsibilities:
The **Members Only** is seeking a skilled attorney for the Adult Survivors Act (ASA) Unit in New York City. The selected Project Attorney will be responsible for ensuring that ASA claims made against the state of New York are properly litigated and defended in the Court of Claims. The attorney will work collaboratively with a statewide team to develop and apply consistent litigation strategies for the efficient and effective defense of these claims. Responsibilities include handling all phases of litigation from inception through trial, which entails drafting pleadings and papers, engaging in motion practice (including analysis, research, drafting, and oral arguments), conducting discovery (including interrogatories, paper/electronic document discovery, and taking and defending depositions), selecting and working with expert witnesses, negotiating settlements, preparing for trial, and representing the state of New York at mediation and trial.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must have at least three years of post-graduate legal experience that includes civil and/or criminal trial experience. They must be prepared to handle the defense of tort actions from commencement through discovery, motions, trial, and disposition. Strong legal research, writing, analysis, negotiation, oral advocacy, and organizational skills are required. Experience in defending or prosecuting sexual assault cases in a civil or criminal context is considered a plus. Candidates must reside in or intend to soon become a resident of New York state and must be admitted to practice law in New York state. Additionally, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two-year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Salary Information:
The salary range for this position is $81,159 - $173,265, plus $4,000 in location pay.
