A law firm seeks an experienced Patent Agent or Technical Specialist to join its dynamic Intellectual Property Practice Group in Newark, NJ. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on a variety of innovative technologies, including mechanical, electrical, and software-related patents. Ideal candidates should have strong technical knowledge and a passion for patent law, with a proven ability to draft and prosecute patent applications both domestically and internationally. The firm is looking for individuals with excellent communication and problem-solving skills who can collaborate effectively with both internal teams and clients.

Duties

  • Draft and prosecute US and international patent applications in various technology fields (mechanical, electrical, and software).
  • Work closely with patent attorneys and clients to develop strategies for patent prosecution.
  • Perform patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Review and evaluate incoming patent disclosures from clients and provide guidance on patent strategy.
  • Manage deadlines and coordinate with foreign counsel for international filings.
  • Prepare responses to office actions and other communications from patent offices.
  • Assist in patent portfolio management and provide support during patent litigation.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in patent prosecution, with a focus on mechanical, electrical, or software technologies.
  • Experience in drafting and filing patent applications in the US and internationally.
  • Strong understanding of patent law and the patent prosecution process.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education

  • A degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or a related technical field is required. A higher degree (Master's or PhD) is a plus.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required.
