Job Title: Attorney General’s Honors Program Participant
Job Responsibilities:
Participants in the Attorney General’s Honors Program will engage in a variety of legal tasks and responsibilities. They will have the opportunity to rotate through one or more subject matter areas such as Antitrust, Civil Rights, Conviction Review, Cyber Crimes, Environmental Justice and Enforcement, and many others. Participants will develop legal, regulatory, and policy strategies and will be involved in enforcing civil rights laws, investigating cases, drafting legal pleadings, negotiating with opposing counsel, and arguing in court or before administrative bodies. They will work within divisions such as the Division of Law, Division of Criminal Justice, Division on Civil Rights, Division of Consumer Affairs, and the Office of Public Integrity & Accountability. Additionally, participants may work directly with the Solicitor General and have opportunities for rotations to different assignments or to work on priority programs and policy development with the Attorney General’s Executive Leadership Team.
Education and Experience Information:
Eligibility for the Honors Program requires applicants to be third-year law students, students in the final year of other graduate law programs (., LLM programs), judicial clerks who will complete their clerkship by September 2025, or individuals who will complete a fellowship by September 2025. Applicants must submit a writing sample, a statement of interest, a resume, a law school transcript, and two references. They must also be committed to public service and demonstrate leadership in school or community activities.
Salary Information:
The starting salary for participants depends on whether they are admitted to the New Jersey bar at the start date for employment. If admitted to the bar, participants will begin as Deputy Attorneys General with an annual salary of $93,. If not yet admitted, they will start as Law Clerks with an annual salary of $59,494, and upon admission to the bar, they will be promoted to Deputy Attorney General with the corresponding salary increase. All participants, regardless of their initial position, are entitled to employment benefits, including health and dental insurance.
Legal and Other Important Requirements:
Participants must commit to two years of service with the Attorney General’s Office and undergo a background check before beginning employment. Within six months of starting the program, participants must become members of the New Jersey Bar, which may require passing the New Jersey bar exam. Additionally, within 12 months of starting the program, participants must establish New Jersey residency or obtain an exemption as required under the New Jersey First Act. Participants are encouraged to continue their public service at the conclusion of the program.
