Job Title: Analyst, ELS
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive legal bill reviews by analyzing invoices submitted under Alternative Fee Arrangements (AFA) and hourly arrangements.
- Review expense documentation and line entries to ensure compliance with outside counsel billing guidelines and billing task and expense codes.
- Ensure the accuracy, compliance, and reasonableness of charges on legal invoices submitted by outside counsel.
- Monitor adherence to outside counsel billing guidelines, which include time entry descriptions, billing rates, staffing models, and expense charges.
- Identify billing discrepancies, unauthorized charges, excessive time entries, and non-compliant billing practices. Communicate findings with internal stakeholders and law firms.
- Collaborate with legal, finance, and procurement teams to support budgeting, forecasting, and cost control of legal services.
- Provide feedback and training to law firms on billing expectations and compliance issues.
- Maintain and update billing guidelines and support their enforcement through contract terms and engagement letters.
- Utilize e-billing platforms such as TyMetrix, CounselLink, Serengeti, and Legal Tracker to facilitate invoice workflow, reporting, and analysis.
- Track and report key metrics related to legal spend, savings opportunities, and billing compliance.
- Assist in the development of internal policies and procedures to streamline the legal bill review process and improve cost efficiency.
Education and Experience Information:
- A Bachelor’s degree is required, with a preference for a degree in legal, finance, or business-related fields. A Juris Doctor (JD) or paralegal certification is considered a plus.
- Candidates should have 5-10 years of experience in legal auditing or legal bill review, legal operations, law firm billing, or legal spend management.
- Proficiency in tools such as Collaborati/TeamConnect, TyMetrix, CounselLink, Legal Tracker, BillingPoint, Brightflag, Coupa, and Ariba is required.
- An understanding of law firm billing practices, legal service delivery models, and legal billing software is essential.
- Experience with outside counsel billing guidelines, engagement terms, and legal cost control is necessary.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail are required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are needed to work with both legal and non-legal professionals and external counsel.
- The ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment is important.
