Job Responsibilities
- Work closely with justices, judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, trial litigators, and court staff, contributing significantly to the judicial process.
- Collaborate daily with fellow court employees, attorneys, self-represented litigants, and court personnel in a dynamic environment.
- Supreme Court Law Clerks: Engage in complex legal issues by working on challenging cases alongside justices.
- Appellate Division Law Clerks: Conduct in-depth legal research, analyze data, prepare memoranda, process emergent motion applications, and proofread published opinions.
- Trial Court Law Clerks: Gain practical experience by observing judicial proceedings, attending conferences, mediating small claims cases, and summarizing information for judges. Also, learn court administration and assist with emergent motions.
- Tax Court Law Clerks: Perform duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts, excluding mediation responsibilities.
- Develop legal skills through mediation training, professional development courses, and earning CLE credits toward bar certification.
- May be required to travel within the tri-county Vicinage and potentially be reassigned to another county within the Vicinage.
- Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.

Education and Experience Information
- Must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of the law clerk appointment.
- The position is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as graduating within the last four years.
- Selected candidates must provide an official, final law school transcript that includes the date of graduation at the time of hire.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Individuals who have served or are currently serving in a trial court or Tax Court clerkship may be eligible for an additional one-year clerkship in the Appellate Division or Supreme Court.
- Completion of a course in mediation before the start of the clerkship is helpful. All trial court law clerks serving as mediators must complete Judiciary-sponsored 12-hour mediation training or its equivalent.

- Supreme Court: $79,456
- Superior Court Appellate Division: $72,540
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $66,508
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $66,508
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil, Criminal and Family): $61,256
- Tax Court: $61,256

- The clerkship term runs from August 18, 2025, through August 28, 2026, with a two-week overlap.
- Hybrid Work Schedule: Eligible for up to four remote workdays per month with high-speed internet access and multifactor authentication.
- Residency Flexibility: Law clerks are exempt from New Jersey’s residency law during their court term, and those serving a second clerkship in a higher court remain exempt.
- Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF): Full-time state employees with 10+ years of service can apply for federal student loan forgiveness.
- Health Benefits: Eligible for comprehensive coverage for you and your eligible dependents through the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP).

- Individuals selected for clerkships must agree to a thorough background check, which will include fingerprinting. All data received will be kept confidential except to inform the individual of the findings and what action will be taken as a result of this information.
