Job Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the 2026 Summer Intern at a reputed firm involve gaining practical experience in law and oral advocacy by working in prosecutors' offices. Interns will handle in-court assignments that are typically managed by assistant prosecutors, giving them a firsthand look at the criminal justice system. Specific duties may include:
- Conducting plea negotiations
- Participating in bench trials
- Engaging in formal hearings
- Reviewing cases
- Appearing at various family court proceedings
- Preparing and potentially conducting one or more jury trials during the summer
Interns will represent the People of the State of Michigan in court proceedings, pursuant to Michigan Court Rule , and will take on assignments similar to those of new assistant prosecutors.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates interested in applying for the internship must meet the following qualifications:
- Completion of at least 40 credit hours of law school by May 8, 2026
- Good standing as a law student with at least one semester or term remaining after the internship
- Michigan residency or a demonstrated intent to practice law in Michigan upon graduation
- An expressed interest in the criminal justice system, particularly in prosecution
- Preference is given to candidates who have completed courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence by May 2026

Salary Information:
Interns will receive a salary of $9, for the duration of the 11-week internship. This compensation is based on a 40-hour workweek at a rate of per hour. Intern positions are at-will, and each intern serves at the discretion of the host county prosecutor.
Additional Information:
The internship program offers approximately 20 positions each summer at various locations across the state. Flexibility regarding geographic location can improve the chances of being selected for an internship. The Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council (PACC) administers the program, and the executive staff will interview and recommend candidates to host county prosecutors, who will make final hiring decisions.
Interns are required to attend a mandatory four-day training and orientation session before starting the internship. This training, which takes place in May 2026 in the Lansing area, provides an intensive overview of legal subjects and trial advocacy. While interns will not be paid during this training period, costs, including most meals and materials, are covered. Lodging is provided at no cost for those living more than 50 miles from the training area.

Required pre-interview materials include a cover letter, resume, PAAM’s pre-interview survey, an unofficial law school transcript, and a writing sample.
