Job Title: Law Clerk 2025 - 2026

Job Responsibilities:
- Supreme Court law clerks collaborate with justices on intricate cases involving complex legal issues.
- Appellate Division law clerks conduct legal research, analyze data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, and proofread opinions.
- Law clerks for assignment judges learn all aspects of court administration and assist with processing emergent motions.
- Trial court law clerks observe judicial proceedings, attend attorney and judge conferences, receive mediation training, mediate small claims cases, and summarize information for judges.
- Tax Court law clerks perform duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts but do not mediate cases.
- Family Division law clerks conduct legal research, assist with remote proceedings, communicate with litigants, draft legal opinions and orders, manage adjournment requests, and handle emergent applications.
- Civil Division law clerks prepare bench memoranda, perform legal research, draft legal orders, manage motion calendars, assist with case management, and communicate with attorneys and litigants.
- Criminal Division law clerks conduct legal research, assist in drafting jury instructions and legal opinions, draft legal orders, manage motion calendars, perform case management functions, and communicate with attorneys.
- General Equity (Chancery) law clerks conduct legal research, review case files, draft orders, proofread judge's orders, interact with counsel and litigants, and attend hearings, trials, or settlement conferences.

Education and Experience Information:
- Candidates must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of appointment.
- The program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as those graduating within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Completion of a mediation course is advantageous, and trial court law clerks serving as mediators must complete Judiciary-sponsored mediation training or its equivalent.
- Applicants must provide an official, final law school transcript including the date of graduation at the time of hire.

Salary Information:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900

Additional Information:
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available annually.
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as per the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A driver's license valid in New Jersey is required only if operating a vehicle is necessary for the position.
- US citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
- Selected individuals must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.
- The "New Jersey First Act" requires new hires to establish and maintain principal residence in New Jersey within one year, except during the clerkship term.
- Applications must be submitted via the Judiciary's web-based portal.
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing up to four days per month of remote work outside Judiciary buildings.
- Law clerks gain practical experience, insight into the judicial process, and exposure to various legal matters.

- Applicants will be contacted by justices or judges for interviews beginning June 17, 2024.
- Candidates must complete the work experience and education sections and attach any required documents.
- Applications must describe all relevant work experience in detail, including military service, internships, and job-related volunteer work.
- Only applicants who follow the application instructions and submit completed applications will be considered for hire.
