Job Title: Commissioner

Job Responsibilities:
Court Commissioners in the **Members Only**, are responsible for performing various judicial functions under the direction of the Presiding Judge. Their duties include:
- Acting as a Temporary Judge in court cases when qualified and appointed based on the stipulation of counsel or parties.
- Conducting daily court calendars, presiding over hearings and trials, and making rulings, findings, judgments, and orders.
- Arraigning defendants, reviewing and ruling on various petitions, motions, and actions, taking evidence, making or recommending court orders, accepting pleas, and imposing sentences.
- Setting cases for hearings and trials, conducting court and jury trials, and presiding over proceedings in family support cases involving Title IV of the Social Security Act, as well as cases filed by the Department of Child Support Services.
- Presiding over criminal and traffic arraignments, hearings, and trials of infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies, as well as civil and small claims actions.
- Reviewing court files, documents, and materials to assess cases before and after hearings, preparing court documents, records, reports, correspondence, and other written materials related to case findings.
- Performing other related duties as assigned by the Presiding Judge.

Education and Experience Information:
- Membership: Candidates must be active members in good standing with the State Bar of California.
- Experience: Candidates must have been members of the California State Bar and admitted to practice law in California for at least 10 years or, with a finding of good cause by the presiding judge, for at least 5 years.
- Other: Candidates must be citizens of the United States and residents of California.
- Desirable Experience: Family, civil, and/or criminal litigation experience is preferred.

Salary Information:
- Hourly:
- Biweekly: $7,
- Annually: $196,

Discussions among judges concerning the appointment of the commissioner are confidential and not to be disclosed to the applicant or others. Applicants are prohibited from contacting judges to solicit support or obtain confidential information. An applicant may contact no more than three judges for references. Violating this prohibition may result in exclusion from consideration for the commissioner position.

Application Evaluation:
All applications are reviewed to determine if applicants meet the minimum job requirements for the Court Commissioner position. Applications are evaluated and ranked by the Commissioner Recruitment and Selection Committee, composed of six judges.

Supplemental Questionnaire:
Applicants must complete a Supplemental Questionnaire, used throughout the recruitment process to determine qualifications and eligibility.

Selection Interview:
Qualified candidates may be invited to interview with the Ventura County Superior Court judges. The interview date is to be determined.
