The NJOPD is currently offering internship opportunities for law students at their New Jersey office. This hands-on experience gives students the chance to work with attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing legal representation to indigent individuals. The internship/externship program offers real-world experience in various areas of law, as well as excellent training and mentorship opportunities. Opportunities are available year-round and statewide.

About the NJOPD

The NJOPD is dedicated to providing first class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Their attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses, represent individuals whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, represent children who have been removed, represent individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, represent those facing Megan’s Law tier classification, and represent individuals seeking post-conviction relief. They also represent clients in Recovery Court and Intensive Supervision Program matters, and have a Forensic Science Unit.

Internships for Law Students

Law students who are in their second or third year of law school can apply for internships/externships with the NJOPD. During their time with the organization, students will assist attorneys and staff with case preparation, litigation, and ongoing projects related to the representation of NJOPD clients. This may include conducting legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, participating in client and witness interviews, and attending training programs. Students who have completed 2 years of law school may also have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.

Interested students can apply by emailing their cover letter, resume, and writing sample (for law students) to Internship Coordinator Dana Lane at ****. The cover letter should explain why the student is seeking an internship/externship with NJOPD, their practice areas of interest, geographic preferences or limitations, and availability. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted between June 15th and July 31st for the Fall term, between October 15th and November 30th for the Spring term, and between December 15th and April 15th for the Summer term.

Application Process

In addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must go through an interview process with the regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and pass a screening process before being offered an internship/externship with the NJOPD. This ensures that all interns are fully prepared and qualified to work with the organization.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for an internship/externship with the NJOPD, students must:

- Be in their second or third year of law school
- Have a strong academic record
- Have excellent research and writing skills
- Be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week for at least one semester
- Pass a screening process and complete all necessary paperwork

Salary Information

Unfortunately, the NJOPD does not offer paid internships. However, students may be eligible for academic credit through their law school or may be able to secure funding through external sources.
