Job Title: Family Defense Practice Intake Supervisor (Part-Time)

Job Responsibilities:
The Part-Time Intake Supervisor at the Family Defense Practice is responsible for supervising and managing the intake team at the Bronx Family Court. The role involves direct representation, supervision, strategic initiatives, and leadership responsibilities. Key duties include:

- Direct Representation:
- Represent a reduced number of clients.
- Provide and arrange coverage for emergencies in court.
- Engage in client interviewing, counseling, research, writing, oral advocacy, and negotiations.
- Zealously represent parents in child protective proceedings and concurrent matters like custody and visitation.
- Communicate and negotiate with judges, caseworkers, child attorneys, and representatives of the Administration for Children’s Services.
- Litigate legal matters in abuse and neglect proceedings.
- Collaborate with social workers, parent advocates, and other practice areas on enmeshed issues.
- Maintain client case files and data.
- Provide mentorship to junior attorneys and supervise interns and externs.

- Supervision:
- Supervise intake on a part-time basis.
- Troubleshoot day-to-day issues and assist with arraigning cases.
- Act as the liaison between court staff and the organization regarding Article 10 intake.
- Provide supervision to attorneys on intake and develop practice guidance.
- Ensure timely and quality emergency hearings for parents.
- Coach attorneys and encourage client-centered representation.
- Analyze and understand ACS petitions and client history.
- Facilitate efficient assignment of counsel and equitable distribution of cases.
- Provide ongoing feedback to practice supervisors and managers.

- Strategic Initiatives:
- Identify systemic issues and collaborate with Family Defense Practice Directors to address them through litigation, policy, and legislative strategies.
- Participate in office initiatives regarding court delays and family defense-related policy lobbying.
- Coordinate implementation and review of pilot initiatives in intake.
- Collaborate with staff to analyze data and inform advocacy strategies.

- Leadership:
- Manage intake shifts in Bronx Family Court, ensuring cases are handled timely.
- Coordinate shift scheduling with other Family Defense Supervisors.
- Advocate with intake stakeholders in the interests of clients and staff.
- Develop best practices and institutional resources for legal issues in intake.
- Coordinate with other supervisors and advocates to implement holistic intake practices.

Education and Experience Information:
To be eligible for the position, candidates must have:

- A minimum of 4 years practicing law as a family defense attorney, including at least one year at the organization.
- Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate, and connect with people from various backgrounds.
- Effective active listening skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong verbal and written advocacy skills.
- Commitment to zealous advocacy and strategic challenging of authority.
- Knowledge of New York Family Court Act, particularly Article 10, and related caselaw.
- Supervisory and mentoring skills, with an interest in developing and mentoring staff.
- Ability to provide feedback, exercise judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
- Commitment to cultural consciousness and challenging oppressive practices.

Salary Information:
The salary for the Part-Time Intake Supervisor position is commensurate with experience, with an approximate range of per hour. The position also includes a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 403(b) plan with employer contribution, and generous vacation, sick leave, and parental leave policies. The position is exempt, meaning it is not entitled to overtime compensation.

Additional Information:
Approximately 70% of the organization’s staff are represented by UAW Local 2325 - Association of Legal Aid Attorneys (AFL-CIO), but this position is not within the bargaining unit.
