Job Responsibilities:
- Gain experience in the practice of law and oral advocacy by working in prosecutors’ offices.
- Handle in-court assignments typically managed by assistant prosecutors.
- Gain exposure to the inner workings of the criminal justice system.
- Engage in activities such as plea negotiations, bench trials, formal hearings, and case reviews.
- Potentially participate in various family court proceedings.
- Prepare and conduct one or more jury trials during the summer.
- Work under the authority to appear and represent the People of the State of Michigan in court proceedings, as per Michigan Court Rule .
- Attend a four-day training and orientation prior to starting the internship, focusing on the duties and responsibilities of prosecutors, legal subjects, and trial advocacy.
Education and Experience Information:
- Must be a law student who will have completed at least 40 credit hours of law school by May 8, 2026.
- Should have at least one semester (or term) of law school remaining after completing the internship.
- Must be a Michigan resident or have an intent to practice law in Michigan upon graduation.
- Should have an articulable interest in the criminal justice system, specifically in the field of prosecution.
- Preference is given to candidates who have completed courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence by May 2026.
Salary Information:
- Interns receive a salary of $9, for 11 weeks of work, based on a 40-hour workweek at a rate of per hour.
Additional Information:
- The internship positions are at-will, and each intern serves at the pleasure of the host county prosecutor.
- The program is administered by the Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council (PACC), a state agency responsible for providing training, informational services, and technical assistance to Michigan’s 83 county prosecutors and their staff.
- PACC’s executive staff will interview students and recommend intern candidates to each host county prosecutor, who will make the final hiring decision.
- Interns must complete the entire 11-week internship if they accept placement.
- There are typically about 20 internships available each summer at various locations across the state, with increased flexibility regarding geographic location improving the odds of being selected.
- Interns selected for the program must attend a four-day training and orientation, with training costs, including most meals and materials, covered. Lodging is provided at no cost for those living more than 50 miles from the training area.
- The application deadline for direct applicants is September 26, 2025. Those interviewing through on-campus interviews must comply with school deadlines.
- Required pre-interview materials include a cover letter, resume, PAAM’s pre-interview survey, law school transcript (unofficial is acceptable), and a writing sample.
