Job Responsibilities:
Interns selected for the program in Senator McConnell's office will be assigned roles as either legislative or press interns. The responsibilities vary based on the assignment:
- Legislative Interns:
- Assist staff by researching current legislation.
- Draft responses to constituents.
- Press Interns:
- Track current news and legislation.
- Assist with press events.
- Draft press releases.
All interns, regardless of their specific roles, are expected to:
- Sort mail.
- Make copies.
- Give tours of the Capitol.
- Answer telephones.
Education and Experience Information:
The internship program is open to any college student who is a resident of Kentucky. Interns are selected based on strong scholastic and extracurricular achievements, as well as an interest in the governmental process. This indicates that while specific educational qualifications or experience might not be mandated, candidates are expected to demonstrate academic excellence and active participation in extracurricular activities.
Salary Information:
The internship offers paid positions throughout the year during three sessions: summer, spring, and fall. However, internships offered in the Senator's state offices are on a volunteer basis and are geared toward interns seeking to earn college credit.

Interns are responsible for their own housing, living, and travel expenses, as well as other necessary arrangements during their time in Washington. Outside of work, interns can enjoy cultural experiences in Washington ., such as visiting Smithsonian Museums, National Monuments, and more.
