Internship Opportunities with the **Members Only** (NJOPD)
NJOPD is currently offering internship opportunities for law students from October 15th to November 30th for the Spring season. This is a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience working with attorneys, investigators, and staff while providing legal representation to indigent individuals. NJOPD offers excellent training and mentorship opportunities, and internships are available year-round throughout the state of New Jersey.
About NJOPD
NJOPD is dedicated to providing high-quality legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses, represent individuals whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, represent children who have been removed, provide representation for individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, represent individuals facing Megan's Law tier classification, and assist individuals seeking post-conviction relief. NJOPD also represents clients in Recovery Court and Intensive Supervision Program matters, and has a dedicated Forensic Science Unit.
Internship Details for Law Students
Law students who are currently in their second or third year can apply for internships with NJOPD. During the internship, students will work closely with attorneys and staff and assist with case preparation, litigation, and ongoing projects related to the representation of NJOPD clients. This may include conducting legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, participating in client and witness interviews, and attending court proceedings. Students who have completed at least two years of law school may also have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.
How to Apply
Interested students should email their cover letter, resume, and a writing sample (for law students) to Internship Coordinator Dana Lane at ****. In the cover letter, students should mention why they are interested in an internship with NJOPD, their areas of interest, any geographic preferences or limitations, and their availability. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted between June 15th and July 31st for the Fall season, between October 15th and November 30th for the Spring season, and between December 15th and April 15th for the Summer season.
Please note that in addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must go through an interview process with the regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship with NJOPD.
