Job Title: Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. are involved in various responsibilities depending on the court they are assigned to. Their duties include:
1. Supreme Court Law Clerks:
- Collaborate with justices on complex legal cases.
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on novel legal issues.
- Assist in the preparation of court opinions.
2. Appellate Division Law Clerks:
- Perform research and analyze legal data.
- Prepare legal memoranda and process emergent motion applications.
- Proofread published opinions.
3. Superior Court Assignment Judges:
- Learn all aspects of court administration.
- Assist with processing emergent motions.
- Gain insight into judicial processes through observation and participation.
4. Trial Court Law Clerks (Civil and Criminal Divisions):
- Observe judicial proceedings and attend attorney conferences.
- Receive training in mediation and mediate small claims cases.
- Summarize information for judges.
5. Tax Court Law Clerks:
- Similar duties as Appellate Division and trial courts without mediation responsibilities.
- Conduct legal research and manage case files.
- Draft case management orders and assist in remote proceedings.
6. Family Division Law Clerks:
- Conduct legal research and assist in drafting opinions and orders.
- Communicate with self-represented litigants and attorneys.
- Manage emergent applications and assist with remote proceedings.
7. Civil Division Law Clerks:
- Prepare bench memoranda for civil motions and trials.
- Conduct legal research and draft legal orders and opinions.
- Manage the motion calendar and assist in case management.
8. Criminal Division Law Clerks:
- Conduct legal research for opinions and motions.
- Assist in drafting jury instructions and legal opinions.
- Manage the motion calendar and assist in remote proceedings.
9. General Equity (Chancery) Law Clerks:
- Conduct legal research on substantive and procedural matters.
- Prepare bench memoranda and draft orders.
- Interact with counsel and litigants regarding case management.
Education and Experience Information:
- Candidates must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association.
- The program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as individuals who have graduated within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Mediation skills are a plus, and completing a mediation course prior to the clerkship is helpful.
- Candidates must provide an official, final law school transcript at the time of hire.
Salary Information:
The salaries for the 2025-2026 Court Term are to be determined based on funding availability. The salaries listed below are for the 2024-2025 Court Term:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
Additional Information:
- The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule with up to four days per month of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings, requiring high-speed home internet access and a multifactor authentication app.
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A driver's license valid in New Jersey is required only if operating a vehicle is necessary for the position.
- US citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
- Selected individuals must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.
- Law clerks are exempt from the New Jersey residency requirement during their court term.
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available annually, with most openings in the Superior Court Law Division and Chancery Division.
