### Job Responsibilities

Law clerks in the **Members Only** are tasked with a range of responsibilities depending on the court and division they are assigned to. The roles include but are not limited to:

- **Supreme Court Law Clerks**: Collaborate with justices on complex legal cases, conduct extensive legal research, prepare written memoranda on novel legal issues, and assist in the preparation of judicial opinions.

- **Appellate Division Law Clerks**: Conduct research, analyze legal data, prepare legal memoranda, process emergent motion applications, proofread published opinions, and edit opinions authored by judges.

- **Trial Court Law Clerks**: Gain practical experience by observing judicial proceedings, attending conferences, and receiving mediation training. They summarize information for judges and may mediate small claims cases.

- **Tax Court Law Clerks**: Perform duties similar to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts but do not mediate cases. They handle legal research, draft case management orders, and manage motion calendars.

- **Assignment Judge Law Clerks**: Learn all aspects of court administration, assist with processing emergent motions, and conduct research and legal memos.

- **Family Division Law Clerks**: Handle cases involving children, youth, spouses, and domestic partners. They conduct legal research, assist in remote proceedings, communicate with litigants, and draft legal opinions and orders.

- **Civil Division Law Clerks**: Prepare bench memoranda, perform legal research, draft legal orders, manage motion calendars, and communicate with various parties involved in litigation.

- **Criminal Division Law Clerks**: Conduct legal research, assist in drafting jury instructions, manage motion calendars, and perform case management functions.

- **General Equity (Chancery) Law Clerks**: Conduct legal research, review case files, draft orders, and assist in processing emergent temporary restraining order applications.

### Education and Experience Information

Law clerks must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of their law clerk appointment. The clerkship program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as having graduated within the last four years. Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential. It is advantageous to have completed a course in mediation prior to the start of the clerkship. Selected candidates will be required to provide an official, final law school transcript, not a photocopy, which includes the date of graduation.

### Salary Information

The salaries for the 2025-2026 Court Term are to be determined based on funding availability. The salaries for the 2024-2025 Court Term are as follows:

- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900

### Additional Information

- **Remote Work**: The position may qualify for up to four days per month of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings, subject to certain conditions such as having high-speed internet access and installing a multifactor authentication app.

- **Application Process**: Applications will be accepted through a web-based portal starting June 10, 2024. Applicants will be contacted directly by justices or judges for interviews on or after June 17, 2024.

- **Eligibility**: Individuals who have served or are currently serving in a trial court or Tax Court clerkship may be eligible to serve an additional one-year clerkship in the Appellate Division or Supreme Court.

- **Employment Regulations**: Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees. A valid New Jersey driver's license is required if vehicle operation is necessary. US citizenship is not required, but authorization to work in the US is necessary.

- **Residency Requirements**: Law clerks are not subject to the New Jersey residency law during their court term. However, clerks moving to another state position immediately following their clerkship must establish New Jersey residency.

- **Background Check**: Selected candidates must agree to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.
