Benefits and Homeless Litigation Supervising Attorney at Organization
The Safety Net Project (SNP) at the **Members Only** is currently seeking a Benefits and Homeless Litigation Supervising Attorney. This role will involve developing and working on impact litigation and direct legal services to protect and advance the rights of homeless New Yorkers and public benefits recipients. The successful candidate will also provide supervision and support to the Benefits and Homeless Team and assist with legal support and technical assistance for SNP's benefits and homeless organizing efforts.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal research, writing, and court appearances in impact litigation to protect the rights of homeless New Yorkers and public benefits recipients.
- Identify and interview potential plaintiffs for SNP's impact litigation projects.
- Collaborate with pro bono partners to secure assistance for SNP's impact litigation projects.
- Communicate with clients, pro bono partners, co-counsel, and community partners.
- Directly supervise homelessness and benefits staff attorney(s) through support meetings, case reviews, and providing guidance and mentorship.
- Assist with trial preparation and development of strategies for supervised attorneys.
- Work with SNP's organizing and outreach team and homelessness and benefits advocates to identify potential impact litigation projects.
- Develop and present trainings for SNP's Benefits and Homeless staff.
Qualifications:
- Admitted, or eligible for admission, to the New York State Bar.
- Minimum of 3 years of litigation experience, including in NYS Supreme and/or US federal court.
- Strong legal research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
- Experience with individual and group litigation.
- A commitment to supporting, training, and mentoring junior attorneys.
- Strategic thinking and the ability to implement practice improvements.
- A strong anti-oppression and social justice approach, with a demonstrated commitment to racial justice and housing justice.
- Experience working with diverse communities and using movement lawyering models.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Spanish proficiency is preferred.
Salary and Compensation:
