**Members Only** (NJOPD) offers internship opportunities for law students looking to gain hands-on experience in the legal field. As a volunteer intern, you will have the chance to work with attorneys, investigators, and staff to provide top-notch legal representation to indigent individuals in the state of New Jersey. About NJOPD
NJOPD is dedicated to providing first-class legal representation to individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals facing criminal charges, represent individuals whose children have been removed due to allegations of abuse and neglect, and advocate for those who have been involuntarily committed to state psychiatric facilities. We also assist individuals facing Megan's Law tier classification, represent clients seeking post-conviction relief, and provide representation in Recovery Court and Intensive Supervision Program matters.
Internship Responsibilities
As a law student intern with NJOPD, you will assist attorneys and staff with a variety of tasks related to the representation of our clients. This may include conducting legal research and analysis, drafting motions and briefs, participating in client and witness interviews, and observing courtroom proceedings. You may also have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted between June 15th and July 31st (for Fall internships), between October 15th and November 30th (for Spring internships), or between December 15th and April 15th (for Summer internships).
Application Process
In addition to submitting your application materials, all applicants will be interviewed by our regional offices and/or the Internship Coordinator. You will also be required to complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork and undergo a screening process before being offered an internship with NJOPD.
Salary Information
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer a salary for our internship positions. However, this is a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience and receive training and mentorship from experienced attorneys and staff.
Internship Duration
Internship opportunities with NJOPD are available year-round and statewide. The Fall internships are from June 15th to July 31st, the Spring internships are from October 15th to November 30th, and the Summer internships are from December 15th to April 15th. The duration of the internship will depend on your availability and schedule, but we ask that you commit to a minimum of 10-20 hours per week.
