About the NJOPD
The NJOPD is dedicated to providing first class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses, represent parents whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, advocate for individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, assist those facing Megan’s Law tier classification, and represent clients seeking post-conviction relief. We also have specialized units for Recovery Court, Intensive Supervision Program matters, and forensic science.
Internships for Law Students
We offer internships for 2Ls and 3Ls, where students can assist attorneys and staff with case preparation, litigation, and ongoing projects related to the representation of our clients. This includes conducting legal research and analysis, drafting motions and briefs, participating in client and witness interviews, and observing and appearing in courtroom proceedings. Students who have completed 2 years of law school may even have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of our attorneys.
