Job Overview

A law firm seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented Associate Attorney to join its medical malpractice defense practice. Duties

  • Draft and file legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and discovery responses
  • Conduct in-depth legal research to support case preparation and strategy development
  • Participate in depositions, mediations, pre-trial conferences, and court hearings
  • Collaborate with medical experts, healthcare professionals, and clients to gather case facts and build effective defense strategies
  • Manage case files from initial intake through resolution, ensuring timely compliance with all deadlines and procedural requirements
  • Provide clear and consistent communication with clients to keep them informed on case developments and legal strategies
  • Assist in negotiations for settlements, where appropriate, and prepare cases for trial when necessary

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience handling medical malpractice or professional liability defense cases
  • Strong research, analytical, and writing abilities, with the capacity to draft precise legal documents and correspondence
  • Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and meeting critical deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to teamwork and client service
  • Prior experience working directly with healthcare clients, expert witnesses, or medical professionals is preferred

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Certifications

  • Active and current license to practice law in the state of Michigan (or eligibility for reciprocal admission)

Skills

  • Proficient in legal research platforms (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis)
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities, particularly when drafting complex legal arguments and summarizing medical or scientific concepts
  • Organizational skills necessary to track deadlines, filings, and case developments across a busy caseload
  • Analytical thinking and creative problem-solving skills to craft compelling legal arguments and defense strategies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management software
