Job Overview
A law firm seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented Associate Attorney to join its medical malpractice defense practice. Duties
- Draft and file legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and discovery responses
- Conduct in-depth legal research to support case preparation and strategy development
- Participate in depositions, mediations, pre-trial conferences, and court hearings
- Collaborate with medical experts, healthcare professionals, and clients to gather case facts and build effective defense strategies
- Manage case files from initial intake through resolution, ensuring timely compliance with all deadlines and procedural requirements
- Provide clear and consistent communication with clients to keep them informed on case developments and legal strategies
- Assist in negotiations for settlements, where appropriate, and prepare cases for trial when necessary
Requirements
- Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience handling medical malpractice or professional liability defense cases
- Strong research, analytical, and writing abilities, with the capacity to draft precise legal documents and correspondence
- Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and meeting critical deadlines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to teamwork and client service
- Prior experience working directly with healthcare clients, expert witnesses, or medical professionals is preferred
Education
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Certifications
- Active and current license to practice law in the state of Michigan (or eligibility for reciprocal admission)
Skills
- Proficient in legal research platforms (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis)
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities, particularly when drafting complex legal arguments and summarizing medical or scientific concepts
- Organizational skills necessary to track deadlines, filings, and case developments across a busy caseload
- Analytical thinking and creative problem-solving skills to craft compelling legal arguments and defense strategies
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management software
