A law firm in Indianapolis is seeking a Workers' Compensation Attorney to join their team. The role involves representing the interests of employers or insurers in workers' compensation cases, including gathering medical evidence, conducting legal research, and litigating cases before workers' compensation judges or referees. The ideal candidate will have 0-3 years of experience defending workers' compensation claims, a proven track record in Workers’ Compensation defense, and a strong understanding of legal principles and practices.

 

Duties:

  • Gather medical evidence and medical records for workers' compensation cases.
  • Take depositions of claimants, physicians, medical experts, and other parties.
  • Conduct discovery, including interrogatories and document requests.
  • Perform legal research to support case strategies.
  • Draft pleadings, findings of fact, motions, briefs, opinions, and other legal documents.
  • Litigate cases before workers' compensation judges or referees.
  • Represent the interests of the employer or insurer at hearings, trials, depositions, oral arguments, mediations, arbitrations, and other proceedings.
  • Communicate with claims representatives and provide legal advice.
  • Monitor loss run reports for trends and increases, alerting management to concerns.
  • Assist with the investigation of accidents and problem areas.
  • Manage workers' compensation costs to reduce liability.
  • Compile and submit reports required by company management.
  • Coordinate and attend claims reviews.
  • Negotiate settlements on behalf of the insurance company.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • . and proof of passing the Indiana Bar exam; passing the Bar in another Midwest state is a plus.
  • 0-3 years of experience defending workers' compensation claims.
  • Proven track record of progressive experience in Workers’ Compensation defense or General Liability (a plus).
  • Working knowledge of legal principles and practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of legal research techniques and legal terminology.
  • Microsoft Word experience is required; Time Matters legal software experience is preferred.
  • Outstanding organizational, interpersonal, research, and administrative skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent telephone and writing skills.
