Organization: Bronx Legal Services Department: Disability Advocacy Project Job Title: Temporary Staff Attorney Experience: 2-3 years’ experience with Social Security disability work, including Social Security disability applications, appeals to the ALJ and Appeals Council, and litigation in Federal Court Temporary Staff Attorney, Disability Advocacy Project (Job#25_2024) Bronx Legal Services is seeking a motivated and experienced Staff Attorney to join our Disability Advocacy Project team. This is a temporary one-year position with the possibility of renewal based on future funding. As a part of Legal Services NYC, we are dedicated to fighting poverty and promoting racial, social, and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. We provide high-quality legal services to address the most pressing issues facing our clients, including housing, income support, consumer protection, family stability, domestic violence, and disabilities. Program Description: The Disability Advocacy Project (DAP) team focuses on assisting low-income residents of the Bronx who are seeking federal disability benefits due to mental and/or physical health impairments and disabilities. Our team works closely with clients to develop their cases and represent them in administrative hearings, appeals, and any subsequent issues that may arise. We also collaborate with community members and partner organizations to identify and address systemic barriers to obtaining disability benefits. Job Responsibilities: - Advocacy and litigation in the Bronx community - Representation in administrative proceedings before the Social Security Administration and appeals to the federal district court - Investigation and development of disability claims - Evaluation of case merits - Preparation of clients for hearings and advocacy during hearings including direct examination and cross-examination of experts - Preparation of written arguments and memoranda of law - Collaboration with partners and community groups for public policy advocacy Qualifications: - . degree from an accredited law school and admitted to practice in New York - 2-3 years’ experience with Social Security disability work, including Social Security disability applications, appeals to the ALJ and Appeals Council, and litigation in Federal Court - Ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds - Strong organizational and time management skills - Demonstrated commitment to providing culturally sensitive services to vulnerable populations - Experience working with individuals with physical and/or mental health disabilities - Passion for social and racial justice - Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team - Excellent analytical, oral, and written communication skills - Proficient in computer skills Salary and Benefits: The salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience, determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
