Unpaid Legal Internship with Department of Children and Families

Gain Valuable Field Experience in Social Work and Related Fields

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) offers an unpaid internship program for college students seeking hands-on experience in their field of study. This program is open to students pursuing a diploma or degree in social work, psychology, or other related fields such as information systems, business management, computer technology, human resources, or legal studies. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to work in various local and area offices, as well as in the CP&P and DCF central offices.

Education Requirements and Disqualifications

To be eligible for the internship program, you must be a current college student. However, please note that certain factors may disqualify you from consideration, including a background check, driving record with five or more points, DUI conviction, or a combination of three motor vehicle violations or license suspensions within the last five years.

Legal Affairs Office Internship

The Legal Affairs Office is seeking interns with excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate professionally with various agencies. As an intern, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks within several units, including legal research and summarization of Appellate and Supreme Court decisions that impact the department. You will also have the opportunity to work closely with two specific units within the office.

Administrative Hearings Unit

The Administrative Hearings Unit (AHU) handles written statewide requests for administrative appeals in cases related to abuse and neglect, licensing, eligibility for services, and adoption. As an intern, you will assist in reviewing cases for appeal eligibility and analyzing documentation to support the burden of proof in court. You will also have the opportunity to assist in writing final agency decisions based on the Administrative Law Judge's ruling after an Office of Administrative Law hearing.

Immigration Unit

The Immigration Unit assists DCF staff with immigration issues faced by the populations they serve. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to learn about special immigrant juvenile status, U-Visas, and Division policies and practices related to immigration. You will also have the chance to network with other agencies and stakeholders to provide access to immigration services for DCF clients.
