Job Title: Staff Attorney, Family Law Project - Queens Family Justice Center (QFJC)

Organization: Sanctuary for Families

Department: Family Law Project

Experience: Up to 4 years of relevant legal experience (or stellar Law Graduate who has passed the Bar Exam)

Salary: $78,000 - $81,979 annually for experienced attorneys, $72,903 annually for Law Graduates

Location: Queens, New York

Job Description:

• Provide legal representation to survivors of domestic and gender-based violence in family law matters in Queens.
• Focus on family offense, custody/visitation, child/spousal support, and divorce cases.
• Conduct civil legal screenings and consultations, assist pro se clients, and conduct community outreach and education.
• Collaborate with other agencies to advocate for systemic change.
• Maintain a caseload of approximately 20 - 30 active clients per month and approximately 40 – 60 active cases.
• Report to the Associate Program Director of the Family Law Project at the Queens FJC.

Responsibilities:

• Provide direct representation and advocacy to clients in family law litigation.
• Provide pro se legal assistance and consultations to clients.
• Collaborate with volunteers, interns, and pro bono attorneys.
• Facilitate clients’ access to resources and financial assistance.
• Provide technical assistance to FJC partner agencies.
• Conduct community outreach, training, and education.
• Actively engage in advocacy committees and task forces.
• Attend and participate in inter-agency conferences and legal/bar association committee meetings.
• Perform any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor.

Requirements:

• . Degree and admission to the New York State Bar.
• Up to 4 years of relevant legal experience (or stellar Law Graduate who has passed the Bar Exam).
• Strong lawyering, advocacy, and leadership skills.
• Experience working in the domestic violence field.
• Highly motivated to provide zealous, knowledgeable, culturally competent, and empathic legal advocacy to domestic violence survivors.
• Ability to work well with people from diverse communities and backgrounds.
• Fluency in a community language other than English is a plus.
