A law firm in Lisle, IL is seeking a Mid-Level Software/Computer Science Patent Associate Attorney to join their team. This role offers the opportunity to prosecute patent applications in the United States and manage foreign patent prosecution. The attorney will serve as an expert in electrical, computer sciences, and software matters and will be responsible for all aspects of a busy patent prosecution practice, including docket management and client communication. This position requires technical expertise in computer science, software, and related areas, as well as the ability to conduct IP due diligence reviews and provide guidance on patentability and freedom to operate. The attorney will collaborate with clients, work in a collegial environment, and have the flexibility to work remotely two days per week.

Duties:

  • Prosecute patent applications in the United States and direct foreign patent prosecution.
  • Act as an expert to clients on electrical, computer sciences, and software matters.
  • Manage all aspects of a busy patent prosecution practice, including patent docket management and communication with the USPTO, other attorneys, and clients.
  • Evaluate invention disclosure materials and prepare and prosecute patent applications for software inventions, including machine learning.
  • Provide technical expertise in computer science, software, and related areas.
  • Conduct IP due diligence reviews and assess patentability, freedom to operate, and ongoing issues affecting the patent process.
  • Liaise with clients regarding the domestic and foreign patent application processes, ensuring timely filings and meeting deadlines.
  • Conduct and participate in client meetings regarding patent research and application processes.
  • Receive training opportunities with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Collaborate across practice groups and offices.
  • Have opportunities for advancement in a collegial environment.
  • Work remotely two days per week.

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of experience with a background in software/computer science.
  • Team-oriented mentality, self-motivated, and comfortable in fast-paced work environments.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Familiarity with the Application Packaging Standard, use of APIs in software development, machine learning (both supervised and unsupervised), and SaaS platforms.
  • Registered and in good standing with the USPTO.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to excel in a team environment.
  • Interest in developing and implementing relationship-building skills both internally and externally.
  • Prior experiences working with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Highly motivated and a self-starter.
  • Flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
