The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender (NJOPD) is currently seeking interns for their Fall program. The NJOPD offers a hands-on experience for college and graduate students, providing them with the opportunity to work with attorneys, investigators, and staff to provide the best possible legal representation for their clients. The internship program offers real-world experience in a variety of tasks, including investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation and advocacy, as well as excellent training and mentorship opportunities.

NJOPD is a first-class legal representation agency that focuses on defending individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. While the majority of their attorneys focus on criminal defense, they also represent individuals in cases involving allegations of abuse and neglect, involuntary commitments to State psychiatric facilities, Megan’s Law tier classification, and post-conviction relief. They also have specialized units for Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy.

Internship opportunities are available for college juniors and seniors, graduate students, and paralegal students. Investigator interns assist NJOPD investigators, attorneys, and staff with a variety of tasks, including locating and interviewing witnesses, serving subpoenas, researching and gathering information and documents, conducting field investigations, and attending court proceedings and training programs. Graduate students in fields such as social work can apply to intern in the specialized units at NJOPD.

To apply for an internship, applicants must submit a cover letter explaining their interest in the NJOPD, their preferred practice areas, geographic preferences or limitations, and availability. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis between June 15th and July 31st (Fall), October 15th and November 30th (Spring), and December 15th and April 15th (Summer). In addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must go through an interview process, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved prior to being offered an internship with NJOPD.
