Staff Attorney, Disability Advocacy Project - Bronx Legal Services

Bronx Legal Services, a branch of Legal Services NYC, is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Disability Advocacy Project. This role will involve working with low-income residents of The Bronx to obtain federal disability benefits and advocating for systemic change to remove barriers to accessing these benefits. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for advocacy, litigation, and community outreach in The Bronx, and will collaborate with community partners to shape public policy.

Key Responsibilities:

- Represent clients in administrative hearings and appeals to federal district court for Social Security disability benefits
- Investigate and develop disability claims, prepare clients for testimony, and advocate at hearings
- Collaborate with community partners to identify and address systemic barriers to accessing disability benefits
- Engage in public policy advocacy to create systemic change
- Work as part of a collaborative team of attorneys and non-legal professionals

Experience & Qualifications:

- . degree from an accredited law school and admitted to practice in New York
- 2-3 years' experience with Social Security disability work, including applications, appeals, and litigation
- Strong interest or experience in litigation/advocacy for systemic change
- Ability to work with diverse populations and provide culturally sensitive services
- Commitment to social and racial justice
- Experience working with individuals with physical and/or mental health disabilities
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills
- Excellent computer, organizational, and time management skills
