DESCRIPTION:
Incumbents assists with the details of all aspects of legal work carrying out job duties such as researching legal issues to find the law in point; preparation of different types of documents pertaining to the handling of cases; collection of documentary evidence information; securing copies of regulations, statutes and case reports; and the screening and processing of correspondence. This position communicates with the general public and various members of the legal profession both orally and in writing.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Reviews requests for legal services and evaluates sufficiency of materials provided by internal clients prior to attorney review
Read and understand business and legal documents
Develops new processes and procedures for tasks and assignments; analyzes operational issues and independently makes decisions
Represents and supports the department to elected officials, City staff, and the public via telephone and personal contact
Prepare reports, communications, written documents, and other correspondence requiring independent judgment in handling format, procedure, and context
Performs legal research, analyzes data for projects, prepares legal documents, prepares responses, develops new processes and procedures for tasks and assignments, analyzes operational issues, and independently makes decisions
Handles a variety of confidential materials
Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:

Customer service
Legal principles and practices, legal terminology, legal research, and legal document processing/preparation
Knowledge of the criminal justice system and criminal prosecution process.
Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment
Filing procedures and practices
Word processing and proofreading skills
Basic research techniques
Conflict resolution and communication skills
Consensus building techniques

Skill in:

Keyboarding and data entry techniques
Microsoft Office Suite
Word processing and proofreading
Conflict resolution and communication
Using a computer and applicable software

Ability to:

Maintain confidentiality
Summarize prior and current criminal charges and convictions
Comprehend legal concepts and Federal, State and City laws
Conduct legal research and prepare detailed legal reports
Examine official documents and extract pertinent information
Ability to coordinate multiple priorities.
Prioritize and assign work
Compile and analyze data and information
Maintain filing systems
Recognize problems, identify alternative solutions, and make appropriate recommendations
Interpret and apply policies, procedures, and guidelines
Write and draft a wide variety of complex legal memoranda and other legal documents
Work independently while exercising sound judgment and discretion
Display good analytical reasoning skills
Develop positive team interaction
Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with clients, coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree in a related field and three years of responsible experience supporting attorneys; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
