Hiring Criteria

Fish & Richardson. follows the set of hiring criteria outlined below.

Fish hires candidates with excellent academic credentials, superior writing ability and those with a scientific or technical background for patent prosecution practice only. Interested candidates can either sign up for an interview if they currently attend one of the law schools that is on the firm's interview schedule they should apply online with a completed application form, current resume, law school transcript, undergraduate transcript and other graduate program transcript and a writing script.

If selected for a callback interview, the candidate will receive a callback invitation from a member of the Recruiting Department. During the callback interview, students typically meet with a member of the Recruiting Department and four to six attorneys. Morning interviews conclude with a lunch with a couple of attorneys.

The firm responds to interviewed candidates within a week or two weeks. The firm adheres to the NALP offer guidelines extended to law students for summer and postgraduate positions.

Pro bono

The firm is committed to making pro bono work an integral part of its professional culture, and it strongly encourages all of its legal professionals to take on pro bono matters as an essential part of their professional lives. The firm backs this commitment by providing its attorneys with full hours credit for approved pro bono matters, and by assigning a principal-level attorney in each of its U.S. offices with the task of seeking out and publicizing local pro bono opportunities.

Every year the firm's attorneys contribute a considerable number of pro bono hours to serve the legal needs of individuals and nonprofit organizations, benefiting the communities where they live and work. Last year Fish lawyers contributed on an average 30 hours per attorney towards pro bono work and this year, 2012, they are likely to outpace that number.

The firms pro bono efforts have helped obtain citizenship for immigrant children fleeing abuse and violence in their home countries to preserving intellectual property rights for income-qualifying inventors and nonprofit organizations.

Since 2009, Fish has been engaged in a partnership with Kids in Need of Defense, a coalition founded by Microsoft and Angelina Jolie, to provide legal counsel to unaccompanied immigrant children in the US.

The American Bar Association Death Penalty Representation Project named Fish & Richardson as recipient of the 2012 Exceptional Service Award for its commitment and dedication to the representation of prisoners on death row.

Summer associate program

Fish & Richardson gives its Summer Associates a broad idea of what it would be like to work at the firm by giving them meaningful work assignments and plenty of opportunities to interact with its attorneys.

Summer Associates may prepare patent and trademark applications; conduct research for litigation cases; attend client meetings, depositions, and even trials. They also receive one-on-one training from attorneys, and through formal training sessions coordinated by the firm's professional development staff. Additionally, summer associates participate in the firm's nationwide videoconferences, which provide information relevant to its practice.

The firm hires Summer Associates hoping that they will continue their careers at the firm. Summer Associates are given feedback throughout their summer time at the firm.
