Georgia Lawyer Pleads Guilty to Ponzi Scheme

After investigations by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Clayton County District Attorney's office, real estate and business law attorney Steven H. Ballard of McDonough, GA pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was sentenced to more than five years in prison. The Henry County Police Department and the Peachtree City Police Department also assisted in the investigation of Ballard's ponzi scheme.

Convicted Sniper Faces Execution

Despite his efforts to seek clemency from Gov. Tim Kaine, convicted killer, John Allen Muhammad will face the death penalty for his crimes. Muhammad was sentenced to death in November 2003 and is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection on November 10, 2009. Despite an appeal by Muhammad's attorneys to block the execution, the U.S. Supreme Court has denied their appeal, which was based on claims that Muhammad is suffering from mental illness and post dramatic stress disorder as a result of his time spent in the military fighting in the Persian Gulf War.

Gomez Law Firm Attorneys Receive Awards

Three attorneys from the Gomez Law Firm in San Diego have been honoured with The Outstanding Trial Lawyer of the Year Awards from the Consumers Attorneys of San Diego Organization (CASD) for their jury trial work. Attorneys, John H. Gomez, and James S. Iagmin were recognized for 'outstanding verdicts' in the case La Framboise vs. Krebs - the first case to invoke the elder abuse statute for a commercial real estate transaction in the state of California.

Dallas Lawyer Succumbs to H1N1 Flu

Officials from Dallas County have confirmed that one of the city's prominent attorneys, Sidney H. Davis Jr., has passed away from complications of the H1N1 flu. Davis had been an attorney with the law firm Touchstone Bernays since 1979. Before his death, Davis, 54, was advising the Commissioners Court regarding an investigation into the conduct of constables. Last month, the court had hired Davis to act as an adviser for an investigation of constables Derick Evans and Jaime Cortes. Both constables have been accused of ''forcing employees to sell raffle tickets for their re-election campaigns and to work unpaid security details.''

Non-Union Mason Worker Awarded Settlement for Job Related Injuries

North Carolina to Release Dangerous Convicts under Old Law

Under the provisions of a decade old law, 20 violent rapists and murderers who are presently serving life sentences will be released from prisons across North Carolina later this month. According to the old law that created in the 1970's, a life sentence is defined as only 80 years in length. Meanwhile, state officials are scrambling trying to figure out how they can legally detain these 'dangerous' inmates and any future inmates behind bars who have been denied parole for decades due to the severity of their crimes.

North Carolina Law Firm Receives 2009 Law Firm Diversity Award

The law firm of Womble Caryle Sandridge & Rice PLLC has received the DRI (formerly Defense Research Institute) 2009 Law Firm Diversity Award. One law firm per year that is committed to diversity is honored by receiving the prestigious national award. Womble Caryle Sandridge & Rice was recognized for its efforts in supporting diversity with various programs, including a law school academy for 25 minority college juniors that will prepare the students for law school, a scholar program for 11 minority students high achievers, and the firm's support of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, which supports 47 historically black colleges and universities nationwide providing merit-based scholarships.

Film Director Roman Polanski Held for Extradition

Film Director, Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland and is being held for extradition to the U.S. Swiss Police took Polanski into custody upon his arrival for the Zurich Film Festival in which he was to receive an award. Swiss authorities acted on a U.S. warrant regarding a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, which Polanski was charged with over 30 years ago.

Texas Upgrades Strangulation to Felony Charge

The state of Texas has passed a new law that ups the charges of strangulation from a misdemeanor to felony. Under the old law, strangulation is classified as a Class C misdemeanor if there wasn't any visible marks left on the victim and the offense could only be upgraded to a felony if the victim passed out. When the new law takes effect next month, all strangulation offensives will be considered felonies.

New Report on Washington's Death with Dignity Law Released

According to a report from the Washington non-profit group, Compassion & Choices, 28 terminally ill residents of the state have taken advantage of the state's Death with Dignity Law to end their lives with medications made available under the new law. The terminally ill residents were legally able to receive life-ending prescriptions under the Death with Dignity Law that came into effect in March. Out of the 28 deaths, only 11 of the individuals used pills to help facilitate their deaths; five residents died without assistance. The new law passed in November 2008, allows patients with fewer than 6 months to live the right to request doctors to prescribe lethal medications if the patient is deemed mentally competent. However, the patient must be capable of administering the medications to him/herself.

Terrorist Fights Upper Canada Law Society to be Called to Bar

A convicted hijacker and terrorist has appealed to the Law Society of Upper Canada to practise law in Ontario. In July 1984, Parminder Singh Saini was part of a Sikh group that hijacked an Indian Airlines jet. The hijackers forced the Airbus carrying 265 passengers to land in Lahore, Pakistan. Negotiations with the Pakistani authorities lasted over 20 hours. The hijackers surrendered, and no one on board was injured.

Florida City Joins CrimeReport.com Network

In a press release issued by CrimeReports.com on September 1, 2009, the city of St. Petersburg, Florida is the 500th law enforcement agency to sign on with the network to share crime data with the public. CrimeReports.com is an online crime mapping network that informs and enables citizens of a particular region to receive crime related information and data through alerts and reports. Over 499 communities across North America have signed up with the network and nearly 100 additional agencies signed on within the past 90 days. Other law enforcements have already joined the network including Washington DC, Boston, Baltimore, Omaha, and Portland, Oregon.

Convicted Bogus Attorney Sentenced Extra Two Years

After completing a seven year sentence for working as an attorney under false pretences, United States District Judge David O. Carter has sentenced a Newport Beach man to an additional two year prison sentence for committing the same crime and violating the terms of his release. According to officials, the additional two year sentence is the maximum allowed under the law.

West Palm Beach Legal Assistant Shot in Botched Robbery Attempt

Legal assistant, Karen Amerita with the West Palm Beach law firm of Perry & Jensen was shot in the stairwell of the firms Executive Center Plaza office on August 7th at 8:42 am. According to West Palm Beach Police Detective, Don Leffew, Amerita was attacked from behind and her assailant demanded money. In what appears to be a ''botched'' robbery attempt, the man ran after the shot was fired and it is uncertain if he managed to steal any money or valuables.
