About the Disaster Legal Services Project:

Our Disaster Legal Services project was created to respond to community legal needs following the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfire disaster and to position LAFLA to rapidly respond to future disaster-related legal needs. The project will be staffed by a Managing Attorney, Staff Attorney, two post-graduate legal fellows, and the Senior Administrative Coordinator, all of whom will work under the general supervision of LAFLA’s Pro Bono Team. This team will provide legal clinics, cases, impact litigation, projects, and community education to those impacted by disasters. As a Senior Administrative Coordinator, you will play a critical role in supporting this project and helping those in need.

Position Overview:

As a Senior Administrative Coordinator, you will have a minimum of five years of experience as an administrative coordinator or legal secretary. You must also have prior experience supporting cases filed in California state or federal court. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe, and Zoom applications is required, along with strong time management skills and the ability to work productively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail. A positive attitude and the ability to interact respectfully with diverse staff and community members are also essential. Additionally, you must have outstanding written and oral communication skills, experience with legal services and poverty law, and a strong understanding of and commitment to social justice. The ability to meet deadlines, perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail, and occasionally work beyond a minimum 8-hour workday is also required. Fluency in Spanish is preferred.

Responsibilities:

- Participate in community outreach and education projects in person and online.
- Support staff and volunteers in workshop and clinic settings to increase legal services to the tenant community.
- Coordinate logistics and administrative aspects of various projects, such as collecting documents from clients, updating/translating various forms, brochures, handouts, and PowerPoint presentations, and preparing/sending out materials to staff/volunteers.
- Work with community partners and organizations to further LAFLA target goals and serve the community.
- Answer inquiries on the status of a case and general procedural aspects of processing legal actions by the office under attorney supervision.
- Provide administrative support, such as maintaining electronic and hardcopy filing systems and appointment calendars, answering inquiries via email, over the phone or in person, case management system data entry, and managing administrative details with minimum direction.
- Answer potential hotline calls and follow up on online applications, screen clients for eligibility, and triage appropriate legal assistance.
- Open and close intakes in real-time.
- Provide appropriate resources to clients, such as brochures, manuals, forms, government or other organizations’ information and resources.
- If applicable, interpret for limited-English proficient clients in attorney-client meetings, administrative hearings, and translate correspondence.
- Ensure appropriate retention/collection of required documents, data, outcome information required for proper closing of case files pursuant to funder demands.
