Current Employee Current Employee Mr. San Francisco

Advice to law firm management:
The firm should seek to increase its overall respect level in the community by taking clients with different legal problems. The firm can also improve its diversity and benefits package.

Pros:
If you want to work in one area of the law, you should consider working here. The firm is not known for branching out, and this is acceptable to the many attorneys who want to find work in that area.

Cons:
The firm does not cast a wide net over the many areas of the law. You may get stuck taking several personal injury assignments on contingency. Many attorneys will not appreciate having to take clients like this.

Former Employee Former Employee Mr. San Francisco

Advice to law firm management:
The firm may benefit from a 360 degree evaluation (associates evaluating partners) as there are clearly disturbing trends that allows problematic partners to stay.

Pros:
The firm has potential and has some good friendly people. It is a good firm in general and is aggressive in its growth. It likes to think long term and generally is fiscally conservative (which is good given the changing legal landscape).

Cons:
The politicking at the firm is somewhat infamous to those who are at the firm - with some terrible partners not treating (let alone managing) associate well. There are also big discrepancies in pay depending on group. Morale can be low among associates.

Partners to Avoid and Why:
Without disclosing the names of the partners, anyone who talks to the associates off-the-record (or the partners for that matter) know that there are a few powerful partners that simply do not treat associates well or fairly. Lost talent and high turnover is apparent.

Favorite Things About this Firm:
The firm is making efforts on a number of fronts to grow and change. That is a good thing. It also seems to have good geographic diversity compared to its peers.

Summer associate program

Barclay Damon offers a summer associate program for qualified second year law students interested in obtaining experience in the practice areas of the firm. The program commences in late May and continues for approximately 11 weeks. All of our Upstate offices participate in the program and are committed to affording qualified law students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and experience of the technical and professional aspects of becoming a lawyer and practicing law. Summer associates work closely with our partners and associates in all of the firm's practice areas on actual client assignments. Summer associates devote a significant amount of time to researching various legal issues and drafting legal memoranda, but also have many opportunities to obtain first-hand experience in litigation and transactional work including observing depositions, trials and administrative meetings and hearings, attending closings for a variety of commercial transactions and drafting agreements.

Barclay Damon's summer associate program has a proven track record of advancing the development of young lawyers. We frequently extend offers to participants in the summer associate program and as a result has successfully integrated new lawyers into the firm who demonstrate technical abilities, creative problem solving skills and commitment to client service.
