Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk

Job Responsibilities:
The Fall 2025 Law Clerk position at the organization offers law students the opportunity to work closely with Juvenile Defenders in all aspects of case preparation, gaining substantive skills, written work product, and real case experience. Law clerks are integrated into trial teams and collaborate with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff to ensure comprehensive client representation. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting legal research
- Drafting motions and memoranda
- Engaging in case planning
- Investigating cases
- Coordinating witnesses
- Preparing for and participating in trials, hearings, and/or sentencings

Education and Experience Information:
This position is open to current law students or recent law school graduates. Law clerks join the organization three times a year: winter, spring, and fall. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and selections are made by district offices. Candidates must specify their office preferences, and it is noted that only the Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.

The organization provides a hands-on experience that allows law students to assist in client-centered and team-based representation of clients. While these are unpaid volunteer positions, the organization supports externs seeking credits for their work or sponsoring grant or other outside funding applications.

The law clerk positions are unpaid volunteer roles. However, the organization may support externs in obtaining credits for their work or sponsoring grant or other outside funding applications.

Interested candidates must complete an application form and submit the following materials via email to the specified address:

- Cover letter
- List of four professional references
- A writing sample no longer than 15 pages
- An undergraduate transcript

The subject line of the email should indicate "Application for Fall 2025 Law Clerk." Application materials must be emailed within a couple of days of submitting the form but no later than August 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

This is an in-person position, and all students must start the clerkship by September 2, 2025, and work for at least 10 weeks. Candidates must indicate their availability for consistent days and hours during the clerkship.

- Candidates must specify whether they are receiving class credit or financial compensation for the position.
- All law clerks are required to commit to working consistent days and hours for the duration of the clerkship.
