Job Title: Staff Counsel, Exempt Organizations, Legal

Job Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice on a wide range of matters related to nonprofit and exempt organizations, including issues concerning fiscal sponsorship and advisory work, federal tax law, and other relevant laws regulating nonprofit corporations.
- Act as a technical resource for legal and compliance issues concerning nonprofit organizations for both company staff and client non-profit organizations.
- Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to identify legal risks and ensure compliance with state and federal laws, including charitable solicitation registration, state tax exemption, and commercial co-venture agreements.
- Develop, streamline, and manage tax and compliance-related policies, systems, operations, and processes.
- Liaise with outside counsel on specific projects to develop in-house expertise.
- Develop and conduct training sessions for staff on legal rules and compliance procedures.
- Provide support on corporate and transactional matters, particularly those related to exempt organization law.
- Offer general assistance to legal and compliance teams to address routine legal or regulatory-related issues or questions.
- Conduct research and perform additional duties as needed.

Education and Experience Information:
- License to practice law in a jurisdiction with a company office.
- Juris Doctor (.) degree and a minimum of five years of experience in a legal or related role.
- Extensive knowledge of exempt organization tax law, including 501(c)(3) public charities and foundations, as well as state laws regulating nonprofits.
- Experience working in-house at a nonprofit organization or directly advising nonprofit organizations is preferred.
- Experience in general corporate law or with non-501(c)(3) organizations (such as 501(c)(4)s, 501(c)(6)s) or lobbying/advocacy rules is advantageous.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work on broad topics.
- Capable of establishing and managing effective relationships with legal and compliance colleagues and diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with a strong client service orientation.
- Ability to work independently and proactively identify and prioritize needs.

Salary Information:
- The annual salary range for this position is $115,000 - $140,000, with an annual bonus potential of 10%.
- Compensation is determined based on national compensation benchmarks for similar organizations, along with job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and training.
- The position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, paid time off, a 401(k) retirement plan with a 4% employer match, reimbursements for personal cell phone plans and fitness, pre-tax withholding for transportation and parking, and access to professional development opportunities.
