Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025
Job Responsibilities:
The Civil Practice Legal Intern position involves working under the supervision of attorneys within the organization's Civil Practice. The role is focused on assisting with legal services aimed at improving the lives of low-income individuals in New York City. The responsibilities include:
- Drafting legal documents such as motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits.
- Conducting legal research to support ongoing cases.
- Attending court and administrative hearings alongside attorneys.
- Assisting with client interviews to gather relevant information for cases.
- Performing other assigned duties that contribute to the resolution of legal issues faced by vulnerable families and individuals.
The internship provides an opportunity to engage with various legal areas, including anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law issues. Interns will also have access to training sessions, webinars, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) relevant to their internship.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants for the Civil Practice Legal Intern position must meet the following educational and experience criteria:
- Currently enrolled as a 2L or 3L law school student in good standing.
- While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not a mandatory requirement.
- Demonstrated commitment to serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities is essential.
- Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all members of the staff.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and think critically.
- Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish, is advantageous but not required.
Stipends and Benefits:
The internship is unpaid; however, interns who meet specific eligibility criteria may receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend is designed to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at the organization. To be eligible for the stipend, interns must:
- Be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution.
- Complete and submit the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form with their internship application.
- Be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization.
- Demonstrate financial need and lack of funding for their internship.
- Submit a statement reflecting a strong interest in working at the organization upon graduation.
The stipend is awarded through a lottery system, and selected interns will be notified before the start of their internships. It is treated as taxable income.
