Job Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Staff Attorney position within the organization include conducting legal research and writing to support trial and appellate lawyers. The role involves mentoring lawyers and providing assistance with criminal defense attorneys, focusing particularly on legal research, writing, and organizing case materials for trial and appeal. Although participation in court proceedings may occasionally be necessary, the emphasis of the position is on research and writing projects and mentoring attorneys within the organization.
The Staff Attorney will assist attorneys primarily in the Non-Capital Trial Divisions, with occasional consultation with the Appellate Division and Capital Trial Divisions. This assistance will include legal research, drafting legal documents, and organizing case files for trial and appellate proceedings. The typical functions of the Staff Attorney include:
- Conducting thorough legal research using various resources.
- Drafting and editing legal documents, including motions, briefs, and other filings.
- Organizing and managing case files to ensure easy access to relevant information.
- Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of state and federal law, procedure, and evidence.
- Supporting attorneys with various aspects of case preparation, including witness preparation and trial strategy.
- Assisting with court appearances as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies required for this role include knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, regulations, constitutional law, and the Oklahoma constitution. Familiarity with agency policies and procedures, trial and hearing procedures, and rules of evidence is also necessary. Skills required include strong analytical and communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, attention to detail, and sound judgment. Abilities include presenting statements of fact and law clearly and logically, analyzing and applying various laws and regulations, conducting independent research, and representing the agency professionally.
Education and Experience
Candidates for the Staff Attorney position must be law school graduates from accredited law schools, possess a license to practice law, and be members of the Oklahoma Bar Association. Additionally, candidates must have at least ten (10) years of experience practicing criminal law. A special requirement for this position is adherence to the Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct.
Salary Information
Compensation for the Staff Attorney position is commensurate with qualifications and follows the agency salary schedule.
