Job Responsibilities:
Interns in the office of . Senator Brian Schatz are tasked with a variety of responsibilities that provide them with a comprehensive understanding of public service, community concerns, legislative processes, and office operations. The specific duties vary slightly between the Washington, . and Honolulu, Hawai‘i offices.
In the Washington, . office, interns may be responsible for conducting research, writing memos, attending hearings or briefings, processing constituent mail, staffing the front desk, conducting tours of the . Capitol, and performing other tasks as assigned.
In the Honolulu, Hawai‘i office, interns may be engaged in drafting messages, supporting outreach activities, processing constituent mail, staffing the front desk, and other tasks as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
This internship opportunity is open to undergraduate and graduate students who meet specific educational criteria. Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least one year of college by the time of their internship application. Preference is given to students who are nearing the completion of their educational programs. Graduate internships are available exclusively in the Washington, . office.
Internship candidates are expected to exhibit strong writing skills, a positive attitude, excellent communication capabilities, adaptability, and a willingness to work as part of a team. While a demonstrated interest in public service is appreciated, the organization also values subject matter expertise and experiential learning.
Preference is given to applicants with strong ties to Hawai‘i, particularly for internship positions in the Hawai‘i office.
Salary Information:
Internships with Senator Schatz’s office are paid positions unless there are conflicts with degree requirements, outside stipends, . Senate employment criteria, or other unique circumstances. The organization is open to working with selected interns to fulfill the requirements of most outside educational programs.
Additional Information:
Internships are available year-round in both the Washington, . and Honolulu, Hawai‘i offices. Students are encouraged to apply early due to the limited number of internship positions available in each office. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and no accommodations can be made once all positions are filled. While part-time internships are offered during the fall and spring semesters, full-time availability is preferred, and only full-time positions are available during the summer.
