Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the Post Conviction Defender's Division are tasked with several key responsibilities aimed at ensuring fairness in criminal convictions and upholding the integrity of the criminal justice system. These responsibilities include:
- Conducting legal research and analysis to support case work.
- Undertaking investigations related to post conviction proceedings.
- Writing legal memorandums, post conviction petitions, and motions for modification.
- Interviewing incarcerated clients both in prison and via video conference.
Education and Experience Information:
The position is intended for current law students or recent law school graduates. Applicants must demonstrate:
- A commitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- The ability to work independently.
The role offers law students a hands-on experience in client-centered and team-based representation, allowing them to engage in significant research and writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation. Law clerks work closely with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff.
Salary Information:
These positions are unpaid volunteer roles. However, the organization supports externs seeking academic credits for their work and can sponsor applications for grants or other external funding.
Application Process:
Applications are submitted through a centralized process, with final selections made by the Post Conviction Defender's Division. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and candidates must submit the following materials: a resume, cover letter, a list of four professional references, a writing sample not exceeding 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript. The application materials must be emailed shortly after submitting the application form but no later than August 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The position requires in-person attendance, with students commencing their clerkship by September 2, 2025, and committing to at least 10 weeks of service.
