Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks at the organization have the opportunity to engage in a comprehensive and hands-on legal experience as part of the Juvenile Law Clerk Program. The responsibilities of a law clerk include:
- Conducting legal research and drafting motions and memoranda.
- Participating in case planning and investigations.
- Coordinating with witnesses.
- Assisting in the preparation for trials, hearings, and/or sentencings.
- Working closely with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff to provide zealous and comprehensive defense for clients.
- Engaging in significant research, writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation.
These roles require a commitment to client-centered and team-based representation, ensuring clients receive the best possible advocacy and representation.
Education and Experience Information:
The position is designed for current law students or recent law school graduates. This opportunity is available to those who are currently enrolled in law school, specifically targeting students in their 1L, 2L, or 3L years. The program offers exposure to real-world legal proceedings and casework, allowing students to gain substantive skills and experience in legal practice.
Salary Information:
The law clerk positions are unpaid volunteer roles. However, the organization supports externs seeking academic credits for their work. Additionally, the organization is willing to sponsor grant or other outside funding applications that may provide financial support to the law clerks.
Application Process:
- Applications for the law clerk positions are accepted on a rolling basis, with opportunities available in the winter, spring, and fall.
- Interested candidates must submit their applications through a centralized process, indicating their preferred district offices within the organization.
- The application package must include a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample no longer than 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript.
- Applications must be emailed within a few days of submitting the form and no later than August 1, 2025.
- Candidates must commit to working consistent days and hours for at least 10 weeks, starting by September 2, 2025.
Additional Information:
The organization provides law clerk opportunities throughout its twelve district offices across the State of Maryland. Candidates are encouraged to specify their preferred locations during the application process, keeping in mind that only the Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
