The . Department of the Interior's Office of the Solicitor is responsible for the legal work of DOI, with over 200 practicing attorneys in the headquarters office and more than 300 attorneys nationwide. The department's mission focuses on conservation and affects millions of people through various offices and bureaus such as the National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The Legal Internship Program offers law students the opportunity to work alongside experienced attorneys and gain hands-on experience in environmental and administrative law, as well as Indian law. Interns will conduct legal research, draft legal documents, and assist with discovery in active federal cases. They may also have the opportunity to attend hearings and meetings in the Washington, . area.
This program is open to undergraduate students who are enrolled at least half-time, public policy graduate students, first-year (second semester), second- and third-year law students, and law school graduates enrolled in graduate law programs. Applicants must be in good academic standing and provide official documentation from their school. Native American candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Legal Internship Program is unpaid, but interns are eligible to participate in the Transit Subsidy Benefit Program. The program also offers the opportunity to work part-time or virtually, with no preference required. Applicants must submit a resume, completed Request for Consideration form, cover letter, transcript, and writing sample as one consolidated PDF. The application can be submitted via email and must be received by 11:59 . EST on the closing date.
