Managing Counsel

Job Responsibilities

As a Managing Counsel, you will have full responsibility to lead and manage all aspects of a Staff Counsel Office(s) for the company. Your primary duties will include:

- Leading and managing a Staff Counsel law office(s) to ensure a culture of high-quality legal work at a competitive cost while providing exceptional service to clients and the company.
- Managing the office(s) to meet financial expectations and ensuring compliance with Staff Counsel reporting requirements, productivity standards, Code of Conduct, company ethics initiatives, and office best practices.
- Overseeing talent management, including staffing, performance management, engagement, professional development, and compensation.
- Driving and promoting a culture of inclusion, engagement, integrity, and teamwork to achieve successful and cost-effective results.
- Assigning cases and initiatives to Staff Counsel, matching the experience, knowledge, and skill level of attorneys with specialization philosophy and established procedures.
- Setting caseload expectations, ensuring timely and quality completion of case handling guidelines, including initial case analysis, litigation plans, case evaluations, summaries, legal research, pretrial reports, and trial reports.
- Developing and implementing strategies to address identified development opportunities, including training, follow-up, and resolution of issues.
- Maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring excellent service to clients/customers by employing methods and strategies commensurate with high-quality legal and customer services.
- Coordinating with Regional Counsel and peers to promote a high-performance culture throughout the Staff Counsel Program.
- Counseling clients effectively through prompt and appropriate communication, sharing expertise, and legal advice on legal matters and changes in the law.
- Ensuring adherence to high ethical standards of professionalism and integrity.
- Handling an appropriate caseload as determined in consultation with the Regional Counsel.
- Analyzing and utilizing management information to drive performance and execute value proposition strategies, utilizing office resources and technology to assure smooth workflow and cost-effectiveness.
- Partnering with the Claim Department on long-term goals and strategies, case handling oversight, and ad hoc matters as they arise.
- Serving as part of the Staff Counsel Leadership team by providing meaningful and thoughtful input to program-wide initiatives and participating in Regional Reviews and national projects.
- Keeping current on trends and issues affecting the business environment.

Education and Experience Information

- from an accredited law school.
- A minimum of 10 years of successful law practice experience.
- Minimum of 5 years project leadership and/or demonstrated informal or actual management experience.
- Admission to and uninterrupted good standing with a court of competent jurisdiction.
- Active license to practice law in the state(s) in which representation is required.
- Valid driver’s license required depending on the location.

Preferred Experience

- 15 years of prior legal experience preferred.
- 5+ years law office/legal management experience strongly preferred.
- Multi-line experience strongly preferred.
- Jury and/or bench trial experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with a variety of cases including large, multi-party-cases.
- Superior writing skills.
- Strong lawyering skills, including trial skills.
- Strong change leadership skills; ability to describe business rationale for change and gain understanding and adoption across a large and diverse organization.
- Demonstrates personal integrity and adherence to a high degree of professionalism and ethical competency.
- Strong ability to collaborate in a team environment.
- Ability to prepare and present information and advice in a clear, concise, logical, and well-organized manner to various business partners.

Salary Information

The annual base salary range for this position is $165, to $272,. The actual salary will be determined by factors including the scope, complexity, and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. Employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of the comprehensive compensation and benefits program.
