Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk

Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks with the organization are entrusted with a range of responsibilities that are crucial in supporting the legal processes of the Post Conviction Defender's Division. The primary duties include:

- Conducting legal research and analysis to support case preparation and courtroom proceedings.
- Carrying out investigations to gather pertinent information related to the cases.
- Drafting legal memorandums, post-conviction petitions, and motions for modification to be used in court.
- Interviewing incarcerated clients both in prison and via video conference to gather information and provide updates on their cases.

Education and Experience Information:
The position is open to current law students or recent law school graduates. Qualified applicants are expected to demonstrate:

- A strong commitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense, reflecting a dedication to the principles of justice and fair representation.
- The ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, showcasing excellent collaboration skills.
- The capability to work independently, displaying self-motivation and initiative in handling assigned tasks.

Salary Information:
These positions are unpaid volunteer roles. However, the organization supports externs seeking academic credits for their work and can sponsor grant or other outside funding applications, where applicable.

Additional Information:
The organization provides a hands-on experience for law students, integrating them into trial teams to work closely with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff. This opportunity allows law clerks to engage in significant research, writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation, contributing to comprehensive advocacy for clients.

Opportunities for law clerks are available during the spring semester (January-May), fall semester (September-December), and summer (May-August). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and interested candidates are encouraged to apply through a centralized process. Final selections are made by the Post Conviction Defender's Division.

Applicants are required to submit their application materials via email, including a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample not exceeding 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript. The subject line of the email should indicate "Application for Fall 2025 Law Clerk." Application materials must be submitted within a few days of completing the application form but no later than August 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

This is an in-person position, and selected candidates must start their clerkship by September 2, 2025, committing to work for at least 10 weeks. Law clerks are expected to adhere to consistent workdays and hours throughout their clerkship, contributing to the organization's mission of tenacious advocacy and zealous representation of its clients.
