Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
The **Members Only** offers law students the opportunity to work as law clerks across its twelve district offices throughout the State of Maryland. These law clerks play a crucial role in supporting the defense of indigent clients charged with felonies and misdemeanors. The position provides law students with hands-on experience and the chance to work closely with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other members of the trial team.
Law clerks are responsible for performing a variety of duties that include:
- Conducting legal research
- Researching and writing motions and memoranda
- Planning cases
- Coordinating with witnesses
- Preparing for and participating in trials, hearings, and/or sentencings
The role is designed to offer comprehensive advocacy and ensure that clients receive the best representation possible. Law clerks are fully integrated into the trial teams and are expected to engage in significant research and writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation.
Education and Experience Information:
The law clerk positions are open to current law students and recent law school graduates. Applicants must be enrolled in or have recently completed a law school program. There is no specific mention of the required year of study, but the application process includes options for law students in their 1L, 2L, or 3L years.
Application Process:
Law clerks are accepted three times a year: spring, summer, and fall. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and candidates must submit their applications through a centralized process. Final selections are made by the district offices. During the application process, candidates can indicate their preferred offices for placement. It is important to note that only the Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
Candidates are required to submit the following materials:
- Resume
- Cover letter
- List of four professional references
- Writing sample (no longer than 15 pages)
- Undergraduate transcript
Applications must be emailed within a few days of submitting the application form but no later than August 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
The position is in-person, and all students must start the clerkship by September 2, 2025, committing to work for at least 10 weeks. Law clerks are expected to work consistent days and hours for the duration of their clerkship.
Salary Information:
These law clerk positions are unpaid volunteer roles. However, where applicable, OPD will support externs seeking credits for their work and sponsor grant or other outside funding applications.
