Job Title: Assistant Public Defender

Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Public Defender is responsible for representing indigent clients in various legal matters, including criminal and juvenile delinquency cases, as well as cases involving abuse, neglect, dependency, and civil contempt. The role requires attorneys to represent clients in both District and Superior Courts, with an emphasis on providing quality legal services. Key responsibilities include:

- Representing clients during first appearances and throughout the legal process.
- Handling difficult cases and clients while maintaining positive professional relationships with colleagues, clients, and the public.
- Visiting clients in jail and prison facilities and traveling outside the office for investigative procedures.
- Engaging in community service and participating in outreach programs, including volunteer initiatives during evenings and weekends.
- Being cross-trained to handle all casework necessary for client advocacy.
- Attending training, meetings, and work obligations at other office locations as required.

Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must possess a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school and must hold an active license to practice law in North Carolina. The organization prefers candidates with at least three years of experience in criminal law. While Spanish language fluency is preferred, it is not a requirement for the position.

Skills Required:
- Knowledge of federal, state, common, and constitutional law, as well as judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
- Familiarity with NC General Statutes for defending various cases, including criminal, juvenile, child support contempt, and parent representation cases.
- Proficiency in legal research methods.
- Persuasive communication, writing, interviewing, and organizational skills.
- Ability to analyze facts, laws, rules, regulations, and related documents and apply applicable laws to those facts.
- Capability to conduct legal research and develop effective litigation strategies.
- Skills in preparing and conducting witness examinations, delivering opening statements, closing arguments, and evidentiary objections.
- Ability to express complex legal concepts clearly and concisely.
- Competency in maintaining a high-volume caseload professionally and efficiently.

Salary Information:
The position offers a salary range of $60, to $90, annually. The salary is flat-rated, and the exact compensation will depend on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
