Job Title

Juvenile Rights Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025

Job Responsibilities

The Juvenile Rights Practice (JRP) of the organization is seeking law students for non-paid internship positions in its trial offices and Law Reform unit for the Fall 2025 term. The legal interns will work directly with JRP attorneys as part of an interdisciplinary team that includes social workers, paralegals, and investigators. JRP trial attorneys provide legal representation to children, ages 0 to 21, who appear before New York City Family Courts on various matters including child welfare, Persons-in-Need-of-Supervision (PINS), juvenile delinquency, adolescent offender, and termination of parental rights cases.

Interns will work under the supervision of Juvenile Rights Practice attorneys, and mandatory supervision will be conducted. Interns are required to attend training sessions and participate in practice-wide webinars relevant to their internship assignments.

Education and Experience Information

Applicants must be current 2L law school students in good standing. While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not explicitly required. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to children's issues and juvenile justice, and possess the ability to deal effectively with children, adolescents, and family members. Additionally, the ability to work collaboratively in a high-volume practice and a demonstrated commitment to serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities are essential.

Salary Information

This is an unpaid internship position; therefore, there is no salary. However, interns who meet eligibility criteria have an opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This fund was established in memory of Judge J. Howard Rossbach, former Attorney-in-Chief of the organization, to support interns who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship. The stipend is awarded through a lottery system to 4-5 interns annually.

To be considered for the stipend, applicants must:

- Be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution.
- Complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form when submitting their internship application.
- Be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization.
- Demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship.
- Submit a statement reflecting a strong interest in working at the organization upon graduation.

Stipend recipients will be selected by lottery if more than 4 or 5 applicants are eligible, and will be notified prior to the start of their internships. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.

Application Process

All applications must be completed online via the organization's Careers Page. Paper submissions are not accepted. Applicants are required to submit a combined PDF of their resume and cover letter through the organization's Recruitment Portal.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The organization is committed to a work culture of zealous advocacy, respect, diversity, inclusion, client-oriented defense, access to justice, and excellent representation. The organization aims to build strong professional relationships with each client, understand their diverse circumstances, and meet their needs. The success of these goals depends on the collaborative efforts of all employees.

Equal Employment Opportunity

As an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Employer, the organization prohibits discriminatory employment actions against and treatment of its employees and applicants based on actual or perceived characteristics including race, color, sex, gender identity, gender expression, disability, marital status, genetic information, military status, domestic violence victim status, and other characteristics protected by law.
